Until Next Year Rudolph.....

Some people are packing up their decorations....I'm not ready to let the season go....
Thank goodness for

The 12 Days Of Christmas...

I can hold on to the memories just a little bit longer...

For next year the kids will be a little older...a little taller...and some will be walking.  My oldest will be a senior and preparing for college....so for now?

I'm keeping my kids in the Christmas Spirit and not letting go...

Until January 5th that is (hee hee)

Booby Babies...

It's no secret I'm a nurser.  Been nursing for 4.4 yrs straight now.

Am I tired of nursing...at times....but I look at it like this...the day I quit is the day my baby days are gone...Thankfully sweet Cole is only 4 months so I have a few years still left.

Each baby has nursed differently...each had their THING.

I found this post I did of Lily back when she was a wee one

Here are a few nursing positions Lily gets herself into...

The Cuddler Position
This is the position where we are tummy to tummy...one of her arms is behind my back rubbing it and the other is hanging on the neck of my shirt

The Laid Back Lady Position
This is where she is latched on but flat on her back....legs and arms out to all sides (looks like making snow angels) I like to call this her 'one too many milk shots the night before' look

The Kitty Position
Again we are tummy to tummy and both of her hands are grasping my breast kneading it like a little kitten getting mommy milk

The Body Warmer Position
This is another tummy to tummy position, but every leg and arm are tucked tightly under my arms or breast like she is trying to get warm
breastfeeding

I love reading this again...makes me remember how sweet and tiny she was...

Reid...well he is a funny one....even to this day he still rolls his eyes in his head when he latches on...it's like the best drink in the world and he's in total contentment.  He then grabs my nursing strap and pulls hard over and over...then tucks his little hand in my shirt on my shoulder...and there he leaves it....sweetness

Cole...still learning what 'his thing' is...right now he is in the pinching the fire out of the back of my arm.   I guess he is trying to knead with the arm that is under me and ends up getting tiny pinches in.  You should see the back of my arms...Looks like I've been hit with a thousand tiny BB bullets...(bruises)  Thank goodness it's not short sleeved weather!

Needless to say though...I love nursing...

I have mastered the art of standing while nursing and nursing while cooking....You do whatcha gotta do with a family of 8....Time sometimes doesn't stop b/c the baby is hungry!!!  Hey I should print a shirt with that motto on it!

A White Christmas....For Us Texans

Merry Christmas Y'all!

(my attempt at the adorable photo going around on Pinterest...only mine wouldn't stand side by side and Cole had pretty much had enough...If I had known they would all be held by the end I would have had #3 pick up Cole...but there's always next year)

We actually ended up having a White Christmas this year.

The great thing about Texas...we get snow and it lasts a few days and then is gone...no brown slush left behind to drive you batty!

Reid was born in a ice storm so he already had his first.....now it was Cole's turn.

He was not amused I might add!  So Cole and I stayed inside watching the kids from the warmth of the couch.

(I like this photo b/c she lost her mitten and was really sad....that and mommy didn't have any waterproof ones and her hands were frozen!)

Last year at this time Hubs and I held a secret....we were expecting Cole and didn't tell the family until after our first sono December 28th.  We remember thinking..."wow at this time next year we will have a 4 month old"  ....and here we are holding our little 4 month old.

We thought to freak the parents out we would wrap a sono picture and that could be their gift...but then I realized I didn't want to be responsible for any old people passing out (har har...and kidding on the old part parents)

Cole gave me a Christmas gift....he slept 10 hrs, ate and then slept another 3 hrs.  Hello sweetness.  That didn't last b/c he was back to his up and down 3 times a night by the next day!  But I'll take the 10 hrs for once!

So we had a 1st Christmas
1st 10 hours
1st snow
1st Christmas as a family of 8

Hope your Christmas was a very merry day....here's looking to 2013

The Joys of Husbands

Mine Rocks...

No, No really.

And I'm not sucking up...I already got my Christmas Gift....(points to new ReidProof...I mean LifeProof phone case)

My hubs took over on Tuesday and became me for a few hours.

Vertigo knocked me to my knees after I woke Tuesday morning.  I first thought I had the flu coming on until I started swaying and hugging the toilet.  I'm blessed my hubby works from home...he took over the two small kids...I nursed Cole and thankfully he took a long morning nap (which he never does) and I passed out along side him too!

I woke to find the house cleaned...laundry done and kids changed and fed.

Hello Husband Fairy!

By day two I felt like I had been drugged....by day three I am back to my old crazy self!

I think back to a few of our first dates.  Hubs and I went 2-steppin and he was spinning me around the floor.  Boom I knew I needed to go home...but was embarrassed to say "Hey I know we are just getting to know each other...but I've got vertigo and I think I'm gonna hurl...can you take me home"

Instead I said nothing...and said "take me home please"  I was silent the whole way (which is SOOO NOT ME)...and I'm sure he thought I was another whack job of a date.  haha

He wouldn't let me out of the car until I told him what went wrong....and I told him.  He was quite relived and then confused on why on earth I didn't JUST tell him....

Oh because it's so crazy weird and I thought I could handle it.

From then on I took a Dramamine before we went dancing...and then he married me and got to experience a full blown day of fun with me.

I'm sure I'm a sight in zombie death mode.....
Last attack I had was when Reid was 4 months...and  Cole is 4 months old...I'm setting a pattern here!

I'm blessed to have a man take total control and help me when I need it most.  I'm also blessed to have a compulsive neat freak of a husband who likes organizing!  Makes waking up from lala land so much better!!!

On a brighter note...check out 2 of my 5 favorite men....

I Should Be Cleaning....But I'm Thinking....

I'm a ball of happiness in this post....(sarcasm)

I really should be cleaning...folding laundry ...organizing rooms...mopping.....wrapping gifts....I'd say taking a shower, but the baby is napping in my room...

So here I procrastinate wanting to vent about how crazy things are.

Seems only fitting we mommy's procrastinate.  I mean after all it's not like our Elf on the Shelf is gonna get off his duff and clean the house while I'm sleeping now is it?

I've tried begging him at night, but he just stares at me with that stupid crazy psycho grin on his face.  (it is creepy you know)

I am at a loss of where to put all the plastic bins of children's clothes....what do other large families do with your hand me downs?  I look like a hoarder.

Which makes me hate laundry which has to be done on a daily basis.... I'm ok with the washing and drying...it's the putting away that gets me stuck
I think we need to wear our clothes a few days in a row...less cleaning for mommy.

Unless your Lily...who thinks she needs to change her panties after every potty break.  I've explained to her that she can wear the same pair as long as they are clean.  She said she knows, but she likes a fresh pair each time...I mean after all Reid and Cole get a fresh diaper each time...(deep sigh)

I really can't argue with her reasoning.

This weekend we decided to go to the mall for last minute gifts.  My husband hates the mall...hates crowds ....so why I asked him to come with us was beyond me.  Have you seen the crowds at the mall right now?  He looked like his brain was about to explode.

I wanted to wear a non nursing top for once.  (been nursing for over 4 yrs straight...I want to look like a non nursing tank mother)  So I pumped a nice 4oz bottle and off we went.  Cole has never had a bottle....nor did any other the other kids, but hey...it's milk ....he'll eat right?

Little did I know that the bottle had a leak and poured in the diaper bag....not good
When I went to feed Cole the bottle, it poured all down the side of him...he was hugely fussy...and not to mention looked at me like I was crazy for feeding him cold milk.

We had to leave the mall and head to car to feed him....thus ended our shopping since all kids 4 and under were melting down.  (more husband head exploding)

And again I realized why we don't go out as a family in the car.  IT'S A TIGHT FIT WITH 8 and 3 of those car seats.

I need to get on the Price is Right to win a 15 passenger Van

Once home we rushed kids in bath and bed.

All seemed well when it dawned on me I didn't order our Christmas cards yet.

Hubs reminded me to forget it...it's mid December  ...no point since they won't arrive until New Years Eve....and we aren't spending the money on express shipping.

What is wrong with me?  I usually have the photos made by November in time for December 1st.

Did I mention I only took the picture yesterday?

Big L on my head.

I'm falling apart I think....

I feel like my days and night run into each other and I don't have a clue one from the next.

Last Friday I thought it was the 13th...(it was the 14th) and missed my dear friend's birthday.  I hate that.  I never miss birthdays

Then on Saturday I thought it was Sunday and on Sunday went to wake the kids for school.

I need a vacation.....

Hubs came to me last night while I was picking up the million pairs of shoes in the house...he said he got me a Christmas present....a trip to Bora Bora and we were leaving first thing in the morning.

I almost believed him....almost.

He did make me smile!  That smile made up for all the craziness of our days and nights.

After this past week's shooting at the Elementary School it made me realize how precious our lives are.

I also know these things have been happening for years....

Almost 30 years ago we had a shooting at our Elementary.  I was in 5th grade and someone crazy person (grown male) decided to drive to schools and shoot kids.  2 boys were raising the flag for the morning and a guy drove up with a gun....they took off running to tell teacher.  Little did  Josh know he got shot through the elbow.   Schools were on lock down....I remember being so afraid someone was still there going to shoot us going home.....
Josh got a call from Pres Reagan and we all thought that was cool.....(oh how fast our minds forget at that moment)

I hugged my babies a little tighter today when they went off to school...and I stopped to answer all of Lily's million questions (no matter how annoying)  I am sure that those parents of the children killed would love more days of endless questions from their babies if they had the chance!

Oops....I hear sweet Cole....off for a feeding and huge hug

Christmas Cookies...Minty Mint

I had a cookie exchange at my house last Friday.   As an incentive to bake their 6 dozen cookies..(yes y'all were complaining and you know who you are) I said we would pick a winner and they would win a 7" wooden block with their initial or #  in family for their mantle.

Not to leave anyone out ...I also had Winter Spatulas for everyone to take home as Thank You For Coming gifts

It really isn't that many to bake in the first place...I mean for my family I have to cook that many anyways so this was a piece of cake.  (I love my big family)

Anywho

I forgot pictures which makes me so lame.

I had a hot chocolate bar...coffee bar....and wassail simmering for drinks.

This year I decided to make a crock pot hot chocolate.  It used a can of Sweetened Condensed Milk....heavy whipping cream and milk...cocoa powder and choc chips   SO YOU KNEW THIS WAS GONNA ROCK.

And it did.  Some of the reviews said it was too rich...but isn't that the point of hot chocolate?

For my cookies I did my Jello Cookies.  My neighbor across the street from us in our old house, used to bake us a huge container of cookies at Christmas  (miss you Sharon)
One of the cookies was a Jello Cookie.  I thought they were the most incredible sweet tangy cookie ever.  I got her recipe all those years ago and have been making them for our family ever since.  My kids inhale them...and so do I.  I assumed everyone loved these as much as us...wrong

My cookies were not a hit at the exchange.  My kids told me not to worry ....and the lime were their favorite.  This time I did Cherry and Lime jello for red and green cookies for the festive look

Hot Chocolate and Coffee Bar (minus the flavored creamers)  and my sweet photo bomber

One of the cookies at the party was so yummy!  It was the Andes Mint Cookie.  Thankfully everyone brings recipes to share!

The ingredients were simple.  The recipe was a breeze.  And everyone will think you are the bomb.

Last night for Wednesday night dinner we had Fajitas and these babies for dessert.  Next time I will triple the recipe....none were leftover

All you need is Andes Mints Box of Devils food cake mix, 1/2 cup oil, and 2 eggs

Mix it all together (minus the mints)

I rolled mine into small 1" balls and baked at 350 for 8 mins.  DO NOT OVERBAKE.

Then as soon as they are out of the oven press an Andes Mint into the center.  I chopped all mine in half and then placed the halves overlapping each other.

Then I popped back in the oven for about 15 secs to help with the melting process.  Or you could wait for a bit for the mint to melt.

Take a tiny flat spatula and spread chocolate for icing.  BOOM

Weddings and Babies...and Crazy Austin

1 month

1

6

Time flies when you are having fun.

I adore looking at how much he changed in just a few short months.

It's crazy really!

This past weekend my little sister got married and I drove Cole and my oldest child to Austin for the wedding.  It was at this gorgeous place called Barr Mansion.

All would be well right since Cole is the happiest baby on the planet right?

Well the car ride wasn't too bad.  We left at his first morning nap.  He slept about 1 hr and was up for about 30 mins...then he got fussy.

Gray got into the back with him and held him off until we got to Waco.  We stopped for grub and fed sweet Pole.
Back on the road to Austin....

Then we HAD TO STOP
at our favorite Robertson's for Jerky.

photo 1-1

If you haven't stopped her between Waco and Austin you are crazy...you must...and bring your $  This jerky is pricey, but well worth it.

I posted this photo on instagram and had a bloggy friend say she just passed on her way back home to SA....Sorry to have missed you Kerbi!!!!

Fed sweet Pole again and prayed he'd make it the rest of the trip.

Wouldn't you know it?  A wreck on 35 once we were in Austin...traffic backed up and Cole started crying....ugh.

This is again the reason I am not a fan of Austin (sorry those who love it)  I still don't get why the freeway splits and then joins again...that upper and lower part?  Screws me up every time.  Because no matter which one I choose it's the slow one or one with the wreck.

Thanks for oldest child's new iphone 5....yes he has one not me...we used the turn by turn directions and got to our hotel with ease.  Hello Downtown Omni.  I felt like a princess!

Always a nice surprise to find your room paid for when you check in...and this was a doozy of a room too!  (thanks dad)  We had a treadmill in the room...how cool is that...if I was a runner haha

photo 2-1

Poor Cole didn't get good naps and we had rush and get ready to head to the wedding....He was not amused.  But hey I thought...he's a great baby...he'll just sleep on my arm.

Arrived at Barr Mansion...This place was gorgeous...

The glass building in the back is where the wedding and reception were held

As soon as we got there Cole started screaming...hello points to girl with screaming baby....
We walked around and bounced and nothing....wedding was starting soon so off I ran to nurse him...he wouldn't quit screaming.  He was so tired.

I was nearly in tears myself b/c I was about to miss my sister's wedding...I didn't want to watch it from the outside ...

He is screaming and screaming and here I stick him on the boob (with no cover...eeek) and rush in from the side and grab my chair to watch.  He was quiet during the vows...and then started wailing...I rushed back outside and watched the rest through the windows.  (deep sigh)

Then he proceeded to scream for 2 more hrs.  I was embarrassed b/c he NEVER CRIES THAT MUCH.  I was seeing family that I haven't seen in ages and I'm explaining he never cries really.  (as if they believed me at this point)

People kept glancing towards me....I was sweating....(might have been the heat waiting outside mingling while they were changing from wedding to reception)

Once inside for reception...he kept screaming.  Finally at 9pm he passed out briefly on my shoulder...

Here he is passed out during a photo op with my cuz

photo 4-1

The band started and he woke....that is about the time we had to bail  (deep sigh)

My sister looked gorgeous and the wedding was perfect and romantic

Congrats Kevin and Rachel

photo 3-1

I was dreading the drive home the next day, but he did really well.  The trick is to leave at naptime and stop every few hrs (or less sometimes) to nurse him and bounce him in the trunk (haha)

This was my first time away from Lily and Reid....I think they did great with daddy.  He couldn't get Reid down for nap or bedtime....and ended up letting him sleep on the couch...so they made it a huge party...All 3 slept on the couches in the living room.  Thanks daddy for being the fun one!

Happy 4 months Cole...can't wait for many more with you!

Nutella...Nuff Said

3 words

OH YEA BABY

You must make these.

It took me under 15 mins.  Can you say simple quick and delicious?

I took a package of cookie mix (you can use a roll of cookie dough too)

photo 1

Roll into tiny balls...put inside mini muffin pan (sprayed with cooking spray of course)
Press into Pan

photo 2

Cook in preheated 350' oven for about 8-10 mins (I did mine a little less..my fam likes them soft)

Make an indention as soon as you pull them from the oven...I used my mini fondant rolling pin.  It worked beautifully!

photo 3

Let them cool in pan for a few mins and then cool completely on baking rack.

Or if you are like me...You can pop them in the fridge for a few.

Lastly...and this is the best part...fill with Nutella.

Best to use a brand new jar... I filled mine to the top and got every last bit from our jar

This yielded about 30 ....which means it lasted my family all of 5 mins.

Corner Lovers

Yesterday my Pampered Chef Brownie Pan came in the mail....it was about 3pm and it was then I realized I didn't have a dessert for Wednesday night dinner with the inlaws.

So what does any good Daughter In Law do?  Googles a recipe for homemade brownies and bakes a batch.

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine , melted
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2  eggs
  • 1/2 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/3 cup  Cocoa
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup Chocolate Chips (I used Milk Chocolate flavor)
  •

Directions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F. Grease pan
  2. Stir together butter, sugar and vanilla in bowl. Add eggs; beat well with spoon. Stir together flour, cocoa, baking powder and salt; gradually add to egg mixture, beating until well blended. Stir in chips, if desired
I took an Ice Scoop and added a heaping scoop to each cup.
     Bake 25 mins
I wasn't sure how much the Pampered Chef pan would need to fill so I doubled the recipe and it was perfect.

The family inhaled the first batch and I had to hurry and make a 2nd batch.  Note to self...order 2 pans haha

First off this is the most amazing recipe...a billion times better than any old box mix.
Second, YOU NEED THIS PAN

Who doesn't love the corners of brownies?  Don't know about you, but my family fight for them and since there are only 4 corners and 8 of us....not a good thing.

As for the recipe...you will thank me later!

On a bright note!

Today is Sweet Pea's first day of ballet.

She woke up this morning itching to have her leotard and skirt on...she's been leaping and twirling around the house ever since!

50 Muffins to Try

One of my many magazine subscriptions is to Food Network.  No surprise that it's a foodie magazine huh?!

Each month they have a tiny insert of 50 recipes.  One month it was soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, burgers, etc...you get the idea.

This month it was 50 muffins

Oh dear sweet goodness!

I am having a cookie exchange at my house on Friday for our playgroup and I decided to bake 3 diff muffins from the book.

The Snickerdoodle, Gingerbread, and Sweet Butter Coconut

Some of the recipes use a base from one of the other ones and then you add an ingredient.  As with the Snickerdoodle...it uses the base from the Streusel and you add a crumble to the batter and top for the Snickerdoodle.  The Sweet Butter is the base for the coconut one...you just add coconut extract and coconut to the batter...

A few of these are folded by hand.  (woohoo) and come out sooo pretty

Grayson Close Your Eyes...I See You

Remember what I said about expectations?

Last night we had our 1st Advent family time.

I didn't want to force Lily and Reid....(I'll make Lily sit next year when she's 5)

The big kids and I gathered around the table...(hubs was wrestling a messy Reid in the tub)
and Lily joined us.

We opened up in Prayer and in the middle of it Lily yells

"HEY GRAYSON CLOSE YOUR EYES...I CAN SEE YOU"

Of course everyone busts out laughing and Grayson shuts his eyes tight.

After the Amen's Lily shouts Ament Advent  ...nothing like the sweetness of 4 yr olds

We get to the lighting of our first candle and Kate wants to light the first one of the year.  We get the clicker out to light and Kate can't click the flame on.  I show her how and pretty much for the remainder of the lesson she is struggling to light it.  My candle has a dent where she kept torching the side.

Lesson went well....better than I hoped.  I lost all my notes from the previous years and the past couple of days have been compiling new ones.

I have to say I was pleased...these were better than my old ones.

Our treat?

Gingerbread.

5

Well I ended up using a Pillsbury Recipe...

It was quick and simple and delicious.  My oldest even took extra to school today.  (he doesn't do leftovers...so you know it was good)

Bread
1 cup packed brown sugar
3/4 cup butter or margarine, softened
2 eggs
3/4 cup molasses
1 cup boiling water
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
4 teaspoons ground ginger
2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon ground allspice
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/4 teaspoon salt
Glaze
1/2 cup powdered sugar
1 to 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 Heat oven to 350°F. Grease 2 (8x4-inch) loaf pans with shortening or cooking spray. In large bowl, beat brown sugar and butter with electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy. Add eggs; beat well. In small bowl, stir molasses, water and baking soda until well mixed; beat into brown sugar mixture.
  •
  • 2 Gradually stir in flour and remaining bread ingredients until well blended. Spoon batter evenly into pans.
  •
  • 3 Bake 50 to 60 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean. Cool in pans on cooling rack 15 minutes; remove from pans. Cool completely, about 1 hour 15 minutes.
  •
  • 4 In small bowl, stir together powdered sugar and enough lemon juice for desired consistency. Brush glaze over cooled loaves. Wrap tightly and store in refrigerator.

We also made the Pinterest inspired Carbo goodness

Spaghetti Pizza Braid

7

We changed it up a bit.....

I used that pizza dough in the can....rolled it into a rectangle...

Added the cooked sausage...sauce....cheese...and pasta to a bowl and mixed it well.

Added it to the center of the rolled dough....Then I made slits on either side of the spaghetti and started to braid the strips over spaghetti from one end to the other

6

I made an egg wash brushed over it and sprinkled garlic salt and parm cheese
Baked at 350 for 35 mins.  yummo
